1989 Loma Prieta earthquake
The Loma Prieta earthquake struck northern California on October 17, 1989 with a magnitude of 6.9. The shock was responsible for 63 deaths and over 3,500 injuries were reported. The earthquake was triggered by a slip on the San Andreas Fault. The epicenter of the quake was near the Loma Prieta peak, in the Santa Cruz mountains, about 60 miles south of San Francisco.
